Mole Removal – Will I Need Stitches?

mole removal

Getting a mole removed is a big decision. You’ll need to have a procedure that will involve something getting physically removed from your body. And because of that, it raises a lot of questions. The most popular one is whether you’ll need stitches after having a mole removed. The short answer is no. Especially not if you’re getting it done at Perfection Cosmetic Clinic in Bolton. But older or alternative methods (which we don’t recommend) could possibly require stitches. We give you a quick rundown of the different methods and whether or not you’d need stitches afterward.

A close shave

One method that some practitioners use is ‘shave excisions’, where they effectively shave the mole. Obviously, it isn’t as simple as it sounds though. A numbing agent is applied to the mole and a special blade is used to remove the raised part of the mole so it’s flush with the rest of the skin. It might sound like an invasive treatment but thankfully it won’t leave you requiring any stitches. However, shaving may not completely remove the mole, and can still be slightly visible. You’ll also need to take proper care of the wound afterward, making sure it fully heals. It’s a lot of faffs…but you probably won’t need stitches.

Stitches if you go the surgical route

Before laser technology and other procedures became popular, the most common method for removing moles was by surgically removing them with a scalpel. This method would involve numbing the area, as with shaving, and then cutting away the mole along with the skin around and underneath the site. As it would leave an open wound, it would then require stitches. At Perfection Cosmetic Clinic, we don’t recommend going down this route as it can be more painful and requires more aftercare. And why would you look elsewhere when you can get a laser treatment that does the job far more effectively?

Laser is the way to go

We offer everything you need if you’re looking for laser mole removal in Manchester. With our CO2 laser, we target the mole with light that destroys the dark pigment. By applying this, the mole eventually loses color completely until it fades. This is an ideal technique, especially if you’re having a mole removed from your face, as it has less risk of scarring. And the best news? You won’t need any stitches.

A word of warning about the DIY route

Although we’ve listed the three main methods for mole removal, some people often choose to try their own hand at it. A pair of scissors to try and cut a mole off; a scalpel bought from eBay; even creams or ointments which claim to offer a miraculous method but leave a huge rash. Suffice it to say, these methods are NOT safe. And they’re quite likely to require urgent medical care which could end up with stitches!
